LDS History

The Mormon Trail though the Kansas Territory began in 1854. The migration is estimated as high as 4,000 people passing through to the west. Most of these emigrants were European converts, many from Scandinavian countries unable to speak English. They were met at Westport by William Empey, commissioned by the Latter Day Saints church to purchase wagons, oxen and supplies for the trip across the plains. It was a difficult journey that required much sacrifice and suffering.
