Junction City is located between the Smoky Hill and Republican on the west side where they merge to form the Kansas River. Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was established in 1853 as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails.
LDS Members make up 4.41% of the population of the Junction City/Fort Riley area. In the state of Kansas there are 34,190 members in 7 stakes, 53 wards and 21 branches.
The Mormon Trail though the Kansas Territory began in 1854. The migration is estimated as high as 4,000 people passing through to the west. Most of these emigrants were European converts, many from Scandinavian countries unable to speak English. They were met at Westport by William Empey, commissioned by the Latter Day Saints church to purchase wagons, oxen and supplies for the trip across the plains. It was a difficult journey that required much sacrifice and suffering.
